In furthering its mission and purpose, NCJW has always prioritized actions to protect the rights and improve the quality of life of children and families.
NCJW fought to preserve civil liberties during the McCarthy era and participated in the civil rights movement. NCJW helped develop the innovative Meals on Wheels program for the elderly, sought childcare programs and family-friendly policies that would benefit children and working mothers, and championed reproductive rights.
In the 1970s, NCJW completed and published a series of studies focused on children’s wellbeing and protection: the first nationwide survey of day care facilities and services Windows on Day Care; a study of the U.S. Department of Justice’s work with foster children, Children without Justice; and a comprehensive manual on child abuse identification and prevention. The organization took a course toward ensuring protections for vulnerable due to neglect and abuse children. NCJW supported the creation of programs aimed to provide representation of foster care children in court and administrative proceedings.
As a part of these efforts, NCJW San Francisco co-founded San Francisco CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and supported its work over the years by providing financial and volunteer support. In 2016, San Francisco CASA honored NCJW San Francisco with a special award in recognition of this strategic achievement.
